Thursdays with Me

THURSDAY-1.png

Thursday is my favorite day of the week. I don’t know if other people have a favorite day of the week, but I do. There reasons why it’s my favorite: there is something about Thursday that seems even (Monday, Wednesday and Friday just feel odd to me); I like how “Thursday” is spelled; I like that it is closer to Friday (and the weekend) than Wednesday. The primary reason it’s my favorite day is because it is MY DAY.

I have six siblings. When we were all young enough to live under the same roof, we each had our own day of the week. I am not sure who assigned the days to us - it is likely related to our birth order - but I was given Thursday.  The day of the week came with three privileges: feed the family dog; sit in the front seat of the car; lead prayers at dinner time. It was always something to look forward to, and it meant that each one of us got to be seen and heard in a special way each week. I also suspect it taught us a thing or two about taking turns.

In my adult life, Thursday continues to be my favorite day of the week. I have found various ways to make it special for myself. While I was living in New York City, I’d try to schedule my favorite jobs during the day, and Thursday night was my date night. I would take myself out on a date – my favorite date was dinner at my favorite local Italian restaurant (not telling!) and a Broadway show. If I didn’t do that, I’d take myself shopping, or pamper myself with a mani-pedi, or have a night at home with movies and junk food or take out.

Now that I’m living back in my hometown of Trinidad, Colorado, I’m looking for ways to make Thursday special for myself. The COVID-19 pandemic has done a number on my mental health, my routines, my living circumstances, and so much more. I know that everyone can relate to this. As much as it takes away from me, COVID-19 cannot take Thursdays away. Thursday comes around once a week, and I know exactly what to do with it.

Every Thursday I will post a new piece of writing on my website. It might come in the form of a blog post, a new poem, a short story – who knows? I want to practice my skills and share my gift of writing with folks who want to read it.

On the best day of the week, keep an eye out for new posts! If you have suggestions for topics or writing forms, I’d love to hear them. Follow me on social media to make suggestions and make sure you see my new content.
