I’m almost to the top of the stack! How exciting! I wonder what I will be…what will get written on me… His name and phone number the first time he calls… The address and time of their first date next week… The “Here’s your copy,” my companion an apartment key… A list of things for him to do on Saturday afternoon… A grocery list passed between the lovers during Sunday shopping… The “Don’t forget about” she puts on the fridge for him… The “I’ll be back at” he leaves by the phone for her… I hope I’m not a bookmark…I hear that’s no fun…
What if I’m a love note! That’d be great! I’ll say how much she means to him in so many words Clinging to the bathroom mirror until she finds me… I’ll say all the things she loves about him and why Sticking to his car windows…that’ll be a family effort on my part… I’ll be the apology he puts on her pillow after the fight… Or the smiley face with Xs and Os she hides in his wallet… I’ll be the vessel of a unique “I love you” someday, Until then, I will wait near the top of the stack, Hoping she picks up the phone and calls him back.
